Electronic distributors for most cars and light trucks came out in about '75, with the tighter emission standards. Same year as cat convertors. It's why the Big 3 came out with 'heavier' 1/2t pickups- Ford's F 150 instead of F-100, etc, because 1/2t's needed cats, heavier stuff didn't.
