Old cotter pin trick ?

Several years ago, someone showed me a trick for bending the ends of a cotter pin on the locking nut for wheel bearings. When the loop head seats down in the groove on most axles, the tips are at 90 degrees from axis of the wheel. It seemed simple, but my mind seems to lose a lot of the good stuff these days !!
