Water pump grease, revisited

Since most vintage grease was soap based and therefore liable to wash out in water, was water pump grease special because it was formulated differently. My thought is that almost any modern, non-soap grease would meet the old spec's for water pumps. My question; aren't modern greases formulated without a soap base? Still ignorant in ND. BB
