Have you noticed that 80% of rail traffic is truck trailers or containers for later truck transfer?
Railroads are great, but you still need to get the cargo from the railyards to the warehouse or factory. I would think that the data would show, on a percentage basis, less trucks moving cross country, and more trucks running regionally. Overall truck traffic is up but that's because of the way we do business now. Goods come into our ports, it's transfered by rail to the regional distibution centers then trucked to the local receiver.
If you want to know if the economy is good or bad, look at the percentage of trucks vs autos on the interstate. More trucks means a growing economy and hense a growing demand for services and fuel.
