how hot should a coil get

Fired the C1-pw up briefly until I discovered an oil leak around the filter cannister. I went to tighten the line and put my hand on the coil and it seemed much hotter than I would have thought it would be. I have an eight volt battery in a 6 volt system. Would this battery have an effect on it and its longevity
