Kurly, your 277 is a wedge motor, but the same block. Poly referred to the head design. The first Mopar V-8's were the first generation HEMI's. In an effort to save production costs, Chrysler came up with the Poly design, virtually the same as a HEMI, but with one row of rockers removed. The elimination of the second row of rockers resulted in canted valves and a "scalloped" lower edge on the valve. They have equal lenth and equal spaced intake and exhaust runners. Some say that they even breath better than a HEMI.
The third generation Hemi is actually a Poly design. Mistakenly called a "wideblock" by some, the block is not wider, but the heads are 'straight up' as oppossed to the tapered wedge heads, thereby giving the motor a "wide" appearance.
