I think re-welding cracked or broken joints like you did would be the best solution, the extra latches would be a stop gap.

I did some re-welding on my WC53, but I didn't tackle in inner support braces you mention... could be the root of my problems with the tail/lift gates. If I had kept the truck I'd look into it... as it is, Lee Alessi might want to check them if he still has the truck. (and maybe Ugg on his too!) :)
