I'm partial to the Redi-Line inverter. It's actually a dynamotor but you can get them in a variety of amp/watt ratings and voltages. Solid state units are nice for electronic equipment like TV's or O-scopes,but they don't react well to stalling a big drill motor or circular saw.
The dynamotors are some times incompatible with variable speed tools but you can plug an incandescent bulb in to the circuit to trick the board and run your V/S tools as normal. Check Grainger or Google "Redi-Line"
