PW Gas Tanks

Couple of questions:

1. The tank on my '49 FF is mounted in the cab behind the seat. I understand that this was optional on later models. Could this installation have been original on a '49?

2. Gas gauge is inoperative. How can I tell if problem is in the sender, the gauge, or both?
