For starters I missed the most obvious clue, IT'S QUIETER! Because it is a CRD with half the noise of the pre HO motor!
From Cummins:
What are the 2003 CTD ratings?
Horsepower and Torque
Engine Type
Advertised hp
Torque
High Output (HO)
305 hp @ 2900 rpm
555 lb-ft torque @ 1400 rpm
Standard Output (SO)
250 hp @ 2900 rpm
450 lb-ft torque @ 1400 rpm
California Engine (and MA, ME)
235 hp @ 2700 rpm
450 lb-ft torque @ 1400 rpm
AND this also from Cummins:
COLUMBUS, IN -- Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CUM) announced today that its next-generation turbo diesel engine will be supplying the power to the 2004 1/2 model year Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup, launching in January 2004.
The re-engineered Cummins 5.9-liter diesel engine builds on the power and quality of the 2003 model year engine that helped make the Dodge Ram Motor Trend magazine's "Truck of the Year." The Cummins engine for the Dodge Ram also merited a best-in-class rating in the J.D. Power 2003 Initial Quality Survey.
The newest Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup offers best-in-class 600 lb-ft of torque and 325 horsepower, making it the most powerful and capable heavy-duty pickup truck on the market. It was built with the most severe-use customer in mind, delivering maximum torque when drivers need it most.
In addition to offering class-leading towing capability of 16,400 pounds and a payload capacity of 5,020 pounds, the Cummins engine is the quietest Ram diesel ever made. It also is the first High Output Cummins turbo diesel to meet emission requirements in all 50 states.
So you see there are several "HO" motors from Dodge. The 2002-2003, 2004 and 2005 ALL "HO" but all with different outputs.
2002-2003 305 hp and 555 lb-ft. of torque and the 2004 with 324 hp and 600 lb-ft. of torque, AND the 2005 with 325 and 610 lb-ft.
Again the early H.O.'s were primarily found in the 6 speed trucks from 2004 on, I believe all trucks had them except CA, MA and ME.
