Most of what I have researched shows 1 tbls spoon to a gallon, although I read those disparities as well. I have been using 1/2 of a 3 lb box which is overkill for a 32 gallon rubber trashcan. If the ammeter is running ok, you can add a little more sodium carbonate and see if the amperage climbs, but most likely it won't. I'm not a chemist but the sodium carbonate is there to make an electrolite soltion where the conductivity is easier between the negative and positive leads.
Be sure to clean an area of the steel where you will attach your lead so you get good conductivity.
Do make sure your work piece doesn't short against your sacraficial anode and don't be afraid to leave it in for a couple of days.
Lastly ensure good ventilation.
