Hi John!
The transmission you have is referred to as the "Up-to-Type" transmission, drain plug 30 degree angel from bottom of case. Parts are readily available for this tranny, but keep in mind all transmission co./shops are not the same (reference material), nor connected to the same suppliers. This means if one co./shop can't help you call the next co./shop, the next etc., until you make a hit. Small parts kit, countershafts, bearing are not to bad in price, but NOS gears, can be a very big ouch!!! I have the "after-type" transmission, and the reverse gear alone is a $100.00 bucks, and it's the smallest.
Suggestions
1. Consider a used tranny. They run $200-250, but have it opened up and look inside for condition of gears before you buy;
2. If you need only a gear, dc's great to deal with. He can probably help you with either one of these and any other parts you need.
A MUST!
In addition to the cover apart, take the tranny all apart. You will most likely have a worn countershaft, and don't be surprised if one of the caged roller bearings falls out in pieces. If you have a single gear PTO, take that shaft out also. It will probably need replacing.
