As an ex-military your truck is a rare PW, I would put it back to original IF it were my truck because the military angle interests me. Since the truck was most likely sourced through a local dealer at the time, it's paint and equipment would not follow a normal military truck of the time. That is why some had chrome and some had it painted over. There were different shades of OD used at different times, you might be able to stretch the point and use a gloss OD if that is more to your likeing. You might even be able to get away with painting the fenders black, if you were to sell it repainting the fenders vs the whole truck for the correct appearance would not be as difficult. In any case I would take pictures and measurements of all the markings now on your truck for future reference.
