Right after removing the rear drive shaft, try driving it around with front-wheel drive only and see if you can still hear the sound. That may help quickly narrow the search. With no load on the rear end, it shouldn't make much, if any, noise. Of course, you could be absolutely sure by pulling the rear axle shafts (a 5-minute job) which would totally eliminate any movement inside the rear axle.
