The main purpose of an ignition capacitor is to prevent arcing across the points as the field in the coil expands and collapses. It will make your points last a lot longer. There is often a separate capacitor, used somewhere outside of the distributor, for radio noise suppression.
If the stock distributor, points, coil, cap, rotor, condenser/capacitor, etc. are not worn or shorting and are properly adjusted, it should work just fine. Check the items mentioned by Bryan and Steve. Personally, I think it's a great stock distributor. After all, how many distributors will let you drive through six feet of water (or big puddles, for that matter) and not short out?
