Pressurized Coolant system or not

I believe on the newer models (late 50's onwards) the radiator was pressurized, although I may be wrong.

Was a '48 B-1 coolant system pressurized? If so to what pressure? What is the benefit/need of running it pressurized? What happens if you don't pressurize a pressurized system?
