I'm with Kaegi on this one. Following the steps outlined in the book is by far the easiest way to go. To remove the engine, bellhousing, clutch, and transmission as a unit, you have to disconnect all of the following: intermediate driveshaft, transfercase levers, emergency brake lever, clutch and brake pedals, and floor pans. As long as you are that far along, you may as well remove the four remaining bolts and drop the transmission while the rest of the engine assembly is still sitting in the truck. You can do this with a transmission jack, floor jack, or just by hand while sitting on the floor where the seat bottom would sit and while straddling the transmission with your legs. It will make the remaining engine/clutch/bellhousing assembly much easier to manage without the additional 100 or so pounds of transmission hanging off of the rear.

Once the engine is removed, without the transmission attached, it is easier to then remove the clutch and bellhousing. Not an easy thing to do to try and unbolt the clutch and bellhousing while the whole works is still mounted in the truck either with or without the transmission attached.
