Gear Oil in Rear hubs

Pulled my rear hubs today to inspect and repack, both sides full of gear oil, no sign of bearing grease. Trying to visualise how it gets in, Does it come thru the axle housing and spindle and gets by the outer seal? Noticed a groove worn into the outer locking nut where it meet the seal, suprised by how much was in the hub
