Paint Recomendations for Runningboards

Does anyone have a good recomendation for painting the runningboards on a ffpw. I called Rhino lining and they were going to charge $240 (material and labor) for the tops only, plus a primer fee of $65 since my runningboards are bare metal, then I still have to paint the bottoms. The material gets up to 1/4" thick which would also interfere with its mounting on the support braces and with the step mounting bolts.

I'm concerned that regular automotive paint is a waste since it will be stood on, scratched and slippery.

So has anyone come up with any brilliant ideas of making a safe, effective and protective surface on the runningboards?
