My vote goes for leather. I've done lots of them & never had a problem. Soaking them before installing them is a must but even after my orange truck has sat here assembled for almost 2 years, there are only a couple of drips at the pinion seals.
My preference to leather is that I find when a modern seal lets go...it will drain whatever it is sealing very quickly. A leather seal will often weep, but seldom just let go like a modern seal that's seen some dirt or abuse like our trucks often get.
The most crucial part of either seal is getting things adjusted properly & being sure that your spindles/yokes aren't worn out...they don't last forever & are the main reason people are unsucessful getting a leak free repair.
If there's any down side to leather...it does tend to wear into the spindles & yokes more than a modern rubber seal.
That's my experience anyway.
