Similar problem in my '66 W-300 several years ago. The bulkhead connector was badly corroded, and when a larger curreent load went through the firewall connector, all was lost. I was driveing at dusk, turned on the headlights, and the truck died. Turned off the headlights, and it would start and run, until I turned on the headlights again. I pulled apart the connector at the firewall, cleaned the contacts, and have not had the problem again.
