I'm about 30 miles north of Chicago, and we have a big Coyote problem. A lot of cats and small dogs are being eaten up. The bad thing is they're starting to pack. A few years back we almost lost a couple of litters to em.
Somehow the pups all got out into the back yard. The two moms were out too. They were all the way in the back of the yard being kept busy by two Coyotes while the pups were all huddled in the middle of the yard (we have over an acre). As I got out there (there was a whole bunch of noise that woke me), there were two more groups of Coyotes, one on each side of my property. They didn't give a squat about me, they kept on moving towards the pups.
So I got the calvary, one of our big boys, a 140 lb white shepherd (we have an even bigger one now). He came out, gave one bark and they were all gone. I guess they thought he was a wolf.
I've heard from animal control recently that now they're even going after big dogs like shepherds, and people too. My silly wife once tried to get one in the car thinking it was a stray dog. HA!
