Dave do not go under 10,000# rating on the trailer. Figure 5,0000 Lbs plus for the truck (ff PW range from 5000# empty and with out a winch to much higher depending on the equipment. My WC53 is also over 5,000#) and 2000# minimum for the trailer and then add any parts or stuff in the truck. Absolute minimum is 7000# rating. Much better to have extra capacity at the 10,000# rating. I would not consider a 8000# sufficient either. Much safer and you are not pushing the limits.
If you have a 7,000# rated trailer and are over its limits and have an accident you bet the other side will sue to empty your pocket book for life. Same goes with the tow vehicle do not exceed the gross combined vehicle weight. I know people do it and get away with it but it only takes one small mistake and your poor for life or dead.
