Wire Fire.... Whats Up With This?

I took advice in trying to determine whats wrong with the electrical system on my '54 FF. Something went wrong....

The direction said to run a wire from the battery to the positive terminal of the coil to assist in trouble shooting. Did that! Next thing I know the jumper wire is burning. So, I obviously stopped the trouble shooting effort.

What did I do wrong?
