Alternative M37 gas tank question

I have read on old posts here about using a gas tank out of a late 70's early 80's Ford E350 Van. Anyone have any experience with using a different gas tank that would still work with the original M37 filler neck? If so what works? Just curious. I know a 3/4 ton military generator trailer tank is the same. I am talking about something that is more readily available. Thanks!
