Here's my theory...there were only a few years of First Series tailgates built. Out of those few years...probably only half of the Power Wagons had Express beds & so there really aren't very many tailgates around. Most WDX-WM300 PW's lead a tough life & most tailgates are trash 50 years later so there is a fairly large market for guys wanting these early gates...especially now that new bed sides are being reproduced.
The 2nd & 3rd series beds...while there were many more produced, there are also many more available. Thousands & thousands of Utiline beds were built for the Sweptline trucks...most of which lead a much easier life. It's not difficult to find a near mint 2nd or third series tailgate if you have as much money available as you'll need for a reproduction 1st series gate.
That's my best guess.
