Polarity does matter! It the shock provided by polarizing actually magnetizes the sensitive relay coil (the one that senses low voltage) thus the regulator will actuate properly and not over charge, you can reverse the polarity of a regulator by polarizing the opposite only if the regulator has not been in service for a year or more, and then sometimes they still won't respond c orrectly to the polarization. This applies to any and all mechanical regulators, newer replacements are generally 'factory' polarized for 12V or 6V NEGATIVE GROUND. Be carefull what you buy! My $.02 worth..
