When it gets super cold ( insert your definition here ) I like to use the block heater and also a magnetic oil pan heater.
If they are on all night my windows will be clear, instant oil pressure, and the intake heater on my Cummins does not even come on.
It uses some juice but works great when needed.
If I was in a truely cold place I would run synthetic oil.
