There are sprinkler systems for cold areas, the pipes do not actually have water in them. They are pressurised with air. When the heat sensors go off the air is released and the water flows into the pipe and out the sprinkler head. Of course you need to have some warm place where the water wont freeze. I had a fire in my wood shop about 8 years ago. I would not wish a fire on my worst enemy.
