The fuel tank that had for the Bumblebee was heavily rusted. It was dry inside and no vapors. I plasma cut the end out and black beauty blasted the inside, she looked like new.
I then welded the end back in.
I decided to use Hirsch Fuel Tank Sealer which is susposed to have some type of FAA Rating. Application was easy, did 2 coats as instructed. The tank was able to cure for probably 4 months while I finished the Bumblebee before adding fuel. The sealer worked well and I was happy. This was in 2002.
Last summer, I was driving and the engine shut down, fuel starved. I could not gat any fuel out of the fuel line. Trailered her home and pulled the tank. Two good sized sheets of the sealer had de-laminated and were sucked into the fuel pickup. I cleaned out the loose pieces. All of the tank sealer on the tank walls looked great. Put it all back together and have not had a problem since.
I 'think' somehow maybe some of the sealer puddled on the second application and this did not fuse well with the first coat. I believe this is what de-laminated.
