1st you need to make sure the Dwell angle (point gap) is set correctly as that effects timing
then set the timing to the factory specs
you can check the vacuum advance with the
timing light to make sure it is working
too much initial advance will cause detonation
if the timing is set correctly and you still have detonation then you have another problem
the cylinder head may have been machined and the compression is now too high for the fuel you are using
