If the bolt patterns and shaft dimensions are identical, it can be done. But the only reason to do it is either to get away from the full time 4WD, in which case a NP205 is more likely to be an easy swap and is stronger (cast iron case, big gears, no planetaries or chain); or to get the lower low range. If the latter and if your 203 is OK, you have a better alternative: use the front half of the 203, which is just simply a 2 speed gearbox with huge helical gears with direct and 2:1, and a "doubler" adapter to a GM NP205 which is obtainable from Offroad Designs. then you'll have essentially two low ranges: 2:1 and 3.92:1. And all cast iron, big gears, no chains, no planetaries. Bullet proof.
