V-8s are easy, the cam splines are on the distributor shaft so you can use an electric drill. No such luck on flatheads. I shot a little engine oil into each cylinder and cranked it a bit without sparkplugs to get it "pre-oiled" - not sure if I did any real good or not. Make sure oil pump is primed with oil so that it pumps right away and that pickup mechanism is clear. You shoul see pressure come up withing a few seconds when you crank it without sparkplugs - if not, look for the problem.
