{{stock diff. gearing is 4.99 which seems too low for my application. What is the best approach, replacing the gears, or hunting down a different set of diff's? }}
Replacing the rear end will be the easiest and quickest way to go. What rear end do you have in the truck now? The original was a Spicer 60. This didn't have a removable assembly. You have to remove the pinion and gears from the housing. This means you have to set the pre-load and all other adjustments. This is not like the 8 3/4 where you can remove the "pumpkin" with the gears intact.
You will also need to change your speedometer gear to make the speedometer read half way right.
