'57 was first year of W series designation for 4x4 Dodges. It was also first year for conventional cab (non military style( 1/2 (W100) & 3/4(W200) tons. Since no 1 ton conv. cab was offered for '57 the W300 was military style.
In '58 a 1 ton conv cab was offered (W300) so name changed to W300M. In '60 this was changed again to WM300 to lessen confusion. W500's are also a conventional cab based 2 ton rig with timken axles and transfercase. They actually started production in '56 as a model HW.
'57 was a very good year for W300's with 8,704 produced.
