PW's and dual tanks?

Does anyone know if dual tanks were an option in 1949? My truck has a hole behind the drivers door for an in-cab gas tank. The gas tank has been removed but the fuel line is still there with a valve on the end of it. The tank under the bed is in use (with working fuel gauge), and the fuel line is tee'd under the drivers seat; one line to the engine and the other to the valve. Was this a factory setup, or has someone put a pickup bed on a chassis cab?
