It's not just a matter of preventing possible damage to the generator, it's to keep the generator from draining the battery when the engine is off. Unlike the current and voltage limiting coils (in a 3-coil regulator), the cut-out is more like a real relay in that it's solidly open or closed, rather than vibrating lightly at the set-point like the limiting coils do. There should be no reason to "adjust" it.
