An old friend/mechanic who was around to help build the Grand Coulee Dam, once told me if you don't know the history of an engine, you're better off using non-detergent oil until such time as you decide to rebuild. His theory was somewhat supportive of your dilemma in that he believed the detergents would loosen things up enough to make the engine loose and, in addition to burning more oil, subject to failure. I'm no mechanic, just passing along his comments. JH
