OT: '94 RAM Front Axel U-Joint/Hub question

Pop's old '94 that I took in on trade for the '99 RAM is out of service (and setting in MO). My brother tells me it's u-Joints are shot (Pop drive it until the front end noise was pretty bad). My brother looked and said the outer short shaft has a lot of up/down (& front/back) play.

My question, is does any one have an illustration for showing if there are bearings/bushings in the hubs or any details as to how if the play is an issue?
