How thick can you cut?

How thick can an ordinary plasma cutter cut? My impression is they're only for thin stuff. Can they do 1/4? 1/2? How are they on structural steel (pipes, I-beams, etc?) It looks to me like the scrappers still use oxy-acetylene or oxy-propane for cutting up everything.
