The wheel well/fender area is not fake. It is stock. That offset is one of the easiset ways of differentiating between an M35 series and an M54 series.
The other ways are by counting the lug nuts, observing the front drive flange contour, and locating the air intake and exhaust.
Of course, these are methods for identifying them at a distance. Close up, there is no comparison. The 5-tons are bigger all over. (Except the cab, which they share with the 2.5 tons, and the ten tons.)
