The maples in the North west are far different than those in the east. The ones here in the west range from big shrubs to small trees. Not really the syrup producing variety. Environmentalists will shudder, but if you put some rock salt on the top of the ground above and around the base of the tree it should kill the roots. Be careful not to get carried away with the salt or you might kill other trees or shrubs. JH
