Dodge/Perkins connection?

I've noticed some comment regarding Dodge trucks with Perkins diesel engines. What years and models were they? Was it a good setup? bad setup? Strengths/weaknesses? What to look for in an engine? I'm thinking about a repower for my 49 Dodge route van using one of these diesels and any info/advice would be appreciated.
