Question RE: Backfiring

What are possible causes of backfiring and how are they corrected? The truck backfires usually a few seconds after shutting down the engine. Is it unburnt fuel in the exhaust chamber from too rich a carb setting or bad timing? I think it's starting to scare the neighbors! Thanks.
