Fine by me as long as you lift the diff out and in. A floor jack would be a great help (not that we always carry one on the trail). Might be a little difficult to use in sand so you may need to move to some slick/flat rock. An 18 volt drill with lots of batteries and bits would be a good idea. Actually, an engine mounted compressor and air tools would not be a bad idea along with a welder. Heck John, bring the shop. By that time your truck will be so heavey and full there would not be room for you.
I was thinking last night that this definitely was not a trail fix. I would have simply pulled the axle shafts and drive line and driven out with the front end. I have only had to do that once when I exploded a diff on a 3/4 International Travelall. I ended up driving from Pensacola, Florida back to New Orleans on the front end as no shop was open.
Not a fun job. I will take picts of the pieces tonight and post them.
