The tank on the Bumblebee was really rusted. I cut the end out with Plasma (Tank was dry no vapors at all), then blasted the insides and welded the cut out back in place. Then I used Hirsch Gas Tank sealer. Looked great and worked for 2 years, then I had my fuel pickup plug with sheets of Hirsch that was peeling off.
The radiator shops have a process ( there are a few different ones) but they are coated properly and guaranteed. A little more money but will worth it.
I would not try to repair a bad, rusted tank again, it would be done commercially.
