I've always figured that if your motor isn't burning a qt every 1,000, then you are building up sludge and gasoline dilution as fast as you are burning the oil.
My 'new' 95 F250 needed a cat. Cat was only 95,000 old.They shouldn't wear out, in theory, since you don't use up a catalyst. So I studied up on cat life. Seems that phosphorus, like lead, kills cats. Major source of phosphorus in motors was---the motor oil! Soo, new International standard, GF-1. Only we are now up to GF-4. In general, GF is a rating of the effects of the oil on the pollution control devices, so lower sulpher, etc. I bought the truck from a city, they may have used a cheap grade of bulk oil? These modern cars are so technical...
