1998 dodge 2500 360 v8

I just bought the truck, noticed a small amount of gear oil leaking from rear pinion. replaced seal and oil. old oil was dark and smelled odd. after 100 mile trip the rar end was very hot. Is this a problem? is the rear end burnded up? any additives that might help. I have 3600 mile trip to take and bring home my next project. will it make it? thanks in advanced.
