My guess is that the high performance folks that sell the electric fans use 7,000 rpm as their basis. Thats double the speed that a flathead is capable of, so it's 4 times the horsepower....so a stock 230 uses 1 3/4 hp. Then, there ain't no free lunch, the electric fan also needs horsepower to run...
My guess is that a thermostatic fan clutch would be the best of both worlds- "7 hp fan" when needed, otherwise freee wheeling, wasting almost no torque.
