Thanks guys.
So in summary it seems that
1. The frame is heat treated so care must be taken not to negate the existing heat treating but warming the steel prior to welding.
2. Drill a stop hole at top of crack, vee out the crack with grinder and spend extra time cleaning and prep.
3. Use a mild steel backup plate on either the inside or outside of frame, with a minimum of the same thickness of steel as existing frame. Underbevel the plate for a good welded vertical surface (creating a vee with wide end towards frame). Heat steel frame with torch, not to cherry red, Weld the steel plate in place then weld the crack using plate as backer. #7018 Rod should be used for welding.
I think that encapsulates all the comments. Did I miss anything or misinterpret anything? I may have misunderstood the diagonal zee welds that Chris mentioned.
Does anyone know the frame steel thickness?
Does anyone have a picture to post of a completed process?
